  • Description

EIGHTEEN YEARS AFTER HIROSHIMA WAS RAZED TO THE GROUND BY A NUCLEAR BOMB. JAPAN IS EXPERIMENTING WITH THE PEACEFUL USES OF ATOMIC ENERGY. THIS WEEK, THE COUNTRY'S FIRST ATOMIC REACTOR WENT INTO SERVICE.

IT IS AN EXPERIMENTAL ONE TO DETERMINE, AMONG OTHER THINGS, HOW MUCH NUCLEAR ENERGY IS REQUIRED BY JAPAN - BOTH INDUSTRIALLY AND DOMESTICALLY. THE REACTOR WAS BUILT AT THE JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE'S HEADQUARTERS AT TOKAI-MURA.

IT WAS FIRST MOOTED IN 1956, AND IN 1960 AMERICA'S GENERAL ELECTRIC WAS AWARDED THE CONTRACT. IT WAS COMPLETED LAST MONTH. IT RUNS ON THE BOILING-WATER SYSTEM.

THE REACTOR ITSELF IS ENCLOSED IN A STEEL CYLINDER 46 FEET (15 METRES) IN DIAMETER AND SUNK 120 FEET (38 METRES) INTO THE GROUND. POWER FOR THE REACTOR CONSIST OF A NUCLEAR "STEAM" GENERATED BY POWERFUL TURBINES. THE ATOMIC CORE CONTAINS, OF COURSE, URANIUM.
