  • Description

A strike by oil industry drivers in Sydney, Australia, has brought transport and commercial life to a near standstill.

All transport services, including internal and overseas aircraft, and private motoria ??? fooling the effects of the stoppage, which was called after a dispute between two rival unions.

Most Sydney service stations are now out of petrol and long queues of motorists line the road outside the few still left with stocks. People are sleeping overnight in their cars to keep their places in the queues.

Taxis are gradually going off the road; trains and buses will soon be on restricted service and industry has started to lay off hundreds of workers.

Unless the strike is settled by the intervention of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Sydney will be at crisis point within four days. It's the second major oil industry strike in six months. The last spread to all States and fears are held that this may be repeated.

At oil industry installations, fleets of road tankers are idle and even when the dispute is settled it will take a week for supplies to start flowing again.

Emergency conferences called by the Arbitration Court and the ACTU so far have failed to find a basis for a return to work by the drivers.
