  • Description

Police in the Indian capital New Delhi had difficulty holding back more than two thousand demonstrators outside the United States Embassy on Tuesday (2 April).

The demonstrators belonged to the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation and were protesting against a proposed United States military base on the British owned island of Diego Garc??? in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles (1,600 kms) south of India.

The demonstrators marched through Delhi to the embassy carrying banners saying "Imperialists Keep Off Indian Ocean" and "Down American-British bases." They were also placards attacking President Nixon of the United States and Britain's Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

The march took place on Indian Ocean day and Mr. Romesh Chandra Secretary-General of the World Peace Council in Helsinki sent the demonstrators best wishes from the Council's national organisations in 120 countries.

Part of the telegram read, "World Peace Council hails worldwide united actions by governments and peoples to make Indian Ocean a zone of peace."
The United States' government is still debating whether to spend almost 100 million dollars (40 million sterling) on turning the island into a full scale American air and naval base. It has even been suggested that nuclear-capable Flll swing-wing bombers should be placed there.

United States' military advisers regard the island as a possible counter to increased Soviet naval activity in the Indian Ocean.

Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam has also protested. Officials in Canberra said Washington and Moscow had been urged to get together to limit their Indian Ocean naval forces.
