    In Japan, most of Asia's top athletes took part in a four-day meeting that started on Thursday (31 May).

    SYNOPSIS: It was held in Tokyo's National Stadium. It was the biggest athletics event held in the stadium since the 1964 Olympic Games. Almost 300 athletes from 19 countries took part in the meeting, held under the auspices of the Asian Amateur Athletics Association. The meet's purpose was to decide Asia's team for the second World Cup track and field championships, due in Montreal, Canada, at the end of August. But the competition was not recognised by the International Amateur Athletics Federation because Israel, a member of the 34-nation Asian body, was not invited...according to the Japanese hosts, because of security reasons. But the Asian team, according to officials, will be picked taking into account the results of the meeting, as well as the records of the top Israeli athletes.

    The opening address was made by Japan's Princess Chichibu, a member of the country's Royal family.

    The women's pentathlon, the 100-metre hurdles sprint. It was won by China's Ye Peisu, number 14, with a time of 14.05 seconds.

    She dominated the pentathlon, winning her first three events. Here the high jump - she later went on to take the shot put.

    The finish of the 20-kilometre walk, after more than ninety minutes. It was won by India's Harkan Singh, with a time of one hour 35 minutes, 39 point five seconds. Second place went to China's Wang Qiang.
