    CONTINUE POLITICAL UNREST IN SARAWAK HAS NECESSITATED THE VISIT OF MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, IN A BID TO HELP SOLVE THE CRISIS. THE TUNKU, WHO ARRIVED IN SARAWAK ON FRIDAY (JULY 1) FOR A FIVE-DAY VISIT, WAS GIVEN A ROUSING WELCOME ON HIS RETURN TO KUCHING YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AFTER TOURING SIBU AND KANOWIT IN THE THIRD DIVISION, WHERE HE DISPELLED THE PEOPLE'S FEARS FOLLOWING RUMOURS THAT THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT WAS SUPPRESSING SARAWAKIANS.

    FOR 12 MONTHS, A SERIES OF CRISIS HAVE DEVELOPED INSIDE THE SARAWAK ALLIANCE, WHICH IS MADE UP OF SPLINTER PARTIES REPRESENTING DIVERSE RACIAL GROUPS. THE SITUATION HAS WORSENED FOLLOWING THE DISMISSAL OF MR. STEPHEN KALONG NINGKAN; FROM THE POST OF CHIEF MINISTER LAST MONTH OF CHIEF MINISTER LAST MONTH BY THE GOVERNOR, TUN ABANG HAJI OPENG. MR. NINGKAN, WHO HAS SINCE MOVED OVER TO THE OPPOSITION. HE HAS SOUGHT A COURT RULING THAT HIS DISMISSAL WAS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. ANOTHER IBAN, PENGHULU TAWI SLI, HAS SUCCEEDED HIM AS CHIEF MINISTER.

    WHILE IN SIBU ON SATURDAY (JULY 2), THE TUNKU WAS INTRODUCED TO GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND GARLANDED BY DAYAK GIRLS.

    SIBU IS A KNOWN COMMUNIST HOTBED.

    CONTINUING HIS TOUR, THE TUNKU JOURNEYED UP THE REJANG RIVER TO KANOWIT ABOARD THE MALAYSIAN NAVY'S MINESWEEPER NAMED MUTIARA.

    AMONG THE LARGE CROWD OF WELCOMERS WAS THE SARAWAK AFFAIRS MINISTER, DATO TEMMENGONG JUGAH.

    AFTER A ROUSING WELCOME THE TUNKU TOOK PART IN A DAYAK CEREMONY IN WHICH A CHIEFTAN SLIPPED A WOODEN BANGLE ON HIS WRIST FOR GOODLUCK. A WHITE COCKEREL WAS USED IN THE CEREMONY WHICH WAS ALSO PARTICIPATED BY THE CHIEF MINISTER, PENGHULU TAWI SLI.

    AT THE END OF THE CEREMONY, THE TUNKU URGED THE PEOPLE TO GIVE THEIR FULLEST SUPPORT TO PENGHULU TAWI SLI.

    TO MARK THE TUNKU'S VISIT, THE INHABITANTS OF KANOWIT ORGANISED A BOAT RACE. TEMMONGONG JUGAH AND THE TUNKU WATCHED THE EVENT WITH THE AID OF BINOCULARS.

    THE TUNKU THEN HANDED A CHEQUE OF $30,000 (MALAYSIAN) ABOUT GBP3,500 STERLING, TO A PRIEST FOR A CATHOLIC CHURCH.

    MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN PEACE CORPS TURNED OUT IN FORCE. THEY WERE GREETED BY THE TUNKU BEFORE CONTINUING HIS TOUR OF KANOWIT.
