  • Description

MOHAMMED BOUDIAF, FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE ALGERIAN PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT, HAS DECLARED THAT HE WILL REMAIN ACTIVE IN POLITICS, DESPITE HAVING SPENT THE PAST 5-MONTHS IN PRISON. BOUDIAF WAS RELEASED FROM DETENTION ON SATURDAY.

BOUDIAF, AGED 44, WAS ARRESTED LAST JUNE AND WITH TWO OTHER LEADING POLITICAL OPPONENTS OF PRESIDENT MOHAMED BEN BELLA, WAS PUT UNDER HOUSE ARREST AT SAANA, SOUTH-WEST OF ALGIERS. AFTER A HUNGER STRIKE HE WAS REMOVED TO AN UNDISCLOSED PLACE OF DETENTION.

THE RELEASE OF BOUDIAF FOLLOWED PRESSURE FROM REBEL BERBER LEADERS WHO STATED THAT ANY PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF DIFFERENCE WITH THE GOVERNMENT WAS CONDITIONAL ON THE RELEASE OF ALL POLITICAL LEADERS.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON SUNDAY, BOUDIAF STATED THAT HE REMAINED IN OPPOSITION TO THE BEN BELLA AND ADDED: "MY IDEAS DO NOT COINCIDE WITH PRESENT POLICY, OR AT LEAST WITH METHODS USED TO PUT IT INTO PRACTICE."
