About 100 wives and relatives of soldiers held in jail since last month's unsuccessful leftist military rebellion gathered outside Lisbon's Presidential Palace on Tuesday (9 December). They were demanding better conditions for the men.

A small delegation that was allowed to enter the palace handed a petition to President Fransisco da Costa Gomes. Their note asked for permission to visit the prisoners held in jails in the conservative north and other rights.

The meeting with President Costa Gomes lasted about one hour. Members of the delegation said that the President had hinted that concessions might be granted.

At least 100 officers and men were arrested after the 25 November uprising -- but none has yet been charged. The dissident soldiers took over Lisbon's main broadcasting stations and other buildings before they were retaken without bloodshed by commandos loyal to the government.
