    IT WAS HERE THAT THE FAMED PATRIOT SIR ROGER CASEMENT AND HIS FRIEND CAPTAIN MONTEITH LANDED FROM A GERMAN SUBMARINE U19 ON GOOD FRIDAY IN 1916. CAPTAIN RAIMUND WEISBACH, WHO COMMANDED THE SUBMARINE, WAS A GUEST AT TODAY'S CELEBRATIONS.

    ANOTHER GERMAN GUEST AT THE CEREMONY WAS KORVETTKAPITAN OTTO WALTER, WHO WAS WATCH OFFICER ON THE U19. THE SUBMARINE LEFT GERMANY IN A FORCE 10 GALE ON 14 APRIL, 1916 TO TAKE CASEMENT TO BALLYHEIGUE BAY OFF KERRY TO RENDEZVOUS WITH ANOTHER GERMAN VESSEL, THE AUD. THE U19 REACHED THE APPOINTED SPOT RIGHT ON TIME BUT THE AUD WAS NOT THERE. WHEN CASEMENT WAS PUT ASHORE HE WAS PROMPTLY ARRESTED.

    THE FOCAL POINT OF TODAY'S CEREMONY WAS THE CEREMONIAL CUTTING OF THE FIRST SOD ON A PLOT WHERE A MONUMENT TO CASEMENT AND CAPTAIN MONTEITH WILL BE ERECTED. CAPTAIN MONTEITH'S MOTHER TURNED THE FIRST SOD. AT THE CEREMONY A MESSAGE FROM MR SEAN LEMASS, PRIME MINISTER OF EIRE, WAS READ OUT. SCATTERED THROUGH THE LARGE CROWD WERE VETERANS OF THE EASTER RISING WHICH CLAIMED MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED IRISH PATRIOTS' LIVES. ALMOST EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY WILL STAGE SOME FROM OF CELEBRATION FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY.
