  • Description

The Foreign Minster of The People's Republic of the Congo, Charles Ganao, flew to Lusaka, the Zambian capital, on Friday (13 September) with a special message from President Marien Ngouabi for President Kenneth Kaunda. Details of the message were not revealed but it was believed to have been connected with the continuing rift within the Angolan Nationalist Movement, MPLA.

After Lusaka, Mr Ganao was to go to Dar es Salaam with a similar message for the Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere.

The Congo, Tanzania and Zambia have all given their support to the movement which has offices in Zambia and Tanzania.

For years the Angolan Nationalist movements have been split. The MPLA, once consider the most vital and radical of the movements, has been rent by internal dissension for the past 18 months. An attempt to unite the warring factions was made last month at a conference in Lusaka, organised by the MPLA.

The attempt failed, but a summit of the Heads of East and Central African States soon after claimed to have achieved some agreement. After the main meeting a communique was issued which, according to Radio Brazzaville, was signed by the leaders of all three groups, announcing unity had been established.

With the announcement by President Ngeubi on "September 5th that Portugal would start negotiations next year on decolonising Angola, the question of unity among the nationalists has become pressing.
