  • Description

A PARIS ART-GALLERY IS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER SHOWING THE PAINTING OF A CHIMPANZEE IN A MAJOR EXHIBITION. TWO OTHER PAINTERS, WHO WERE TO HAVE HAD PAINTINGS IN THE EXHIBITION, HAVE WITHDRAW THEM IN 'DISGUST'.

THE FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD CHIMPANZEE, PAT, WAS BOUGHT BY HIS OWNER, CESAR CAPELLINI FROM HAMBURG ZOO. HE LEARNT TO PAINT FROM HIS MASTER, WHO IS AN AMATEUR PAINTER. PAT ONLY USES FIVE COLOURS: RED, GREEN, YELLOW, BLUE AND BLACK, BUT HIS PAINTINGS ARE REGARDED BY SOME EXPERTS AS GOOD STANDARD WORKS IN THE SCHOOLS OF 'INFORMAL' ART.

PAT WAS INVITED TO TAKE PART IN AN EXHIBITION AT THE PARIS MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, AND HIS PAINTINGS HANG ALONGSIDE THOSE OF POLIAKOFF, CADIOU, SURVAGE AND MAN RAY. HE HAS ENTERED TWELVE OF HIS WORKS - TWO OILS AND TEN WATERCOLOURS. SOME HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOLD: A GERMAN BUYERS BOUGHT ONE FOR 500 FRANCS (ABOUT GBP40). ONE OF THE CHIEF ATTRACTIONS IS THAT PEOPLE WHO COME TO THE MUSEUM CAN SEE HIM PAINT, AND THEY DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE DO ONLY WITH THE FINISHED PRODUCT FOR THEIR MONEY.
