  • Description

HORACIO ACCAVALLO OF ARGENTINA ON TUESDAY WON THE WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE, AS RECOGNISED BY THE WORLD BOXING ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES. THE 31-YEAR-OLD SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPION OUTPOINTED JAPAN'S KATSUYOSHI TAKAYAMA OVER 15 ROUNDS IN A BOUT IN TOKYO FOR THE VACANT TITLE.

ACCAVALLO'S VICTORY IN THE MATCH BROUGHT THE TITLE BACK TO ARGENTINA FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE PASCUAL PEREZ LOST IT TO PONE KINPETCH OF THAILAND SIX YEARS AGO. THE TITLE BECAME VACANT WHEN ITALY'S SALVATORE BURRUNI WAS STRIPPED OF THE CROWN BY THE WORLD BOXING ASSOCIATION FOR NOT DEFENDING IT AGAINST HIROYUKI EBIHARA OF JAPAN BEFORE NOVEMBER 1, 1965.

THE MATCH ENDED IN A SPLIT DECISION. REFEREE NICKY POPE (USA) SCORED IT 73 TO 69 IN FAVOUR OF ACCAVALLO. JUDGE KO TOYAMA (JAPAN) MADE IT 71 TO 71. ARGENTINIAN JUDGE ELOY GONZALES HAD ACCAVALLO THE WINNER BY 74-66.

(THE EUROPEAN BOXING UNION STILL RECOGNISES ITALY'S BURRUNI AS FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, AND HE IS TO DEFEND THE TITLE AGAINST BRITAIN'S WALTER McGOWAN IN LONDON ON JUNE 14).
