World Powerboat racing Champion Dr. Carlo Bonomi of Italy was presented with the Griffiths Memorial Trophy at a special ceremony in New York on Tuesday (11 February).
Dr. Bonomi wen seven of the eight World Championship series races, losing his only one in front of a home crowd at Via Reggia, Italy, last July.
He began powerboat racing only a few years age, almost by accident. While shopping for a pleasure-boat, the versatile Doctor came across a racer in a boatyard, and decided to buy that instead. His racing career went from strength to strength.
In the last World Championship series, Bonomi used a boat specially designed by racer-designer Don Arronau, one of powerboat racing's most successful competitors.
But on Tuesday Dr. Bonomi announced that he has decided to retire from competitive racing to concentrate on his may other interests; expanding his business, studying economics and driving the powerful Italian-built Ferrari motor cars.
