  • Description

ELEVEN MINERS, ONCE GIVEN UP FOR DEAD, WERE CAREFULLY BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE AT LENGEDE, WEST GERMANY TODAY (THURSDAY) FOR A JOYFUL REUNION WITH WIVES AND FAMILIES AFTER TWO WEEKS IN A TINY CAVITY UNDERGROUND.

IT WAS EARLY THIS MORNING THAT THE LAST INCHES OF THE RESCUE SHAFT WERE GENTLY BORED THROUGH TO THE TRAPPED MEN. A STEEL LINING WAS FITTED AND THEN THE SLIM CIGAR-SHAPED METAL CONTAINER WAS LOWERED 191 FEET (58 METRES).

IN IT RODE THE FIRST OF TWO MINER VOLUNTEERS WHO WERE DESCENDING TO THE CAVITY TO HELP STRAP THE MEN INTO THE CONTAINER, ONE BY ONE, FOR THE JOURNEY UP TO SAFETY. ELEVEN AMBULANCES, ONE FOR EACH MAN, STOOD BY TO TAKE THE MINERS TO HOSPITAL. A TEAM OF 14 DOCTORS AS WELL AS SPECIALISTS WERE ALSO WAITING. THE MESSAGE TO HAUL THE CAPSULE UP FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS GIVEN...

THEN THE NEWS WAS FLASHED ALL OVER THE WORLD -- THE FIRST OF THE MINERS HAD BEEN BROUGHT UP TO THE BRIGHT SUNSHINE. HE WAS HEINZ KULL, 51, FATHER OF THREE CHILDREN. THE GREY-HAIRED MINER, HAGGARD AND WEARING DARK GLASSES AGAINST THE LIGHT, WAS HELPED FROM THE CAPSULE BY DOCTORS.

THE WHOLE RESCUE OPERATION TOOK AN HOUR...EACH TIME THE CAPSULE SHUTTLED UP AND DOWN THEE WAS ONE MAN LESS IN THE UNDERGROUND TOMB.T HE MEN-- UNSHAVEN, FILTHY, AND HALF-DAZED AT THE MIRACLE OF THEIR RESCUE -- WERE CARRIED TO WAITING STRETCHERS AND THEN BY AMBULANCE TO HOSPITAL. THERE IT WAS SAID THEIR PHYSICAL AND METAL CONDITION WAS "FAIRLY GOOD" CONSIDERING THEIR ORDEAL, FOR THE FIRST TEN DAYS THEY HAD ENDURED A NIGHTMARE EXISTENCE WITHOUT FOOD,
(THE DISASTER OVERWHELMED THE IRON ORE MINE TO WEEKS AGO WHEN A TORRENT OF MUD AND WATER FROM A BURST RESERVOIR FLOODED THE MINE. SEVENTY-ONE MEN ESCAPED IMMEDIATELY AND FIVE WERE RESCUED BY RUBBER RAFTS THE NEXT DAY. THREE WERE BROUGHT OUT OF A HIGH PRESSURE AIR POCKET BELOW WATER LEVEL A WEEK LATER.

(THE REMAINING 40 WERE GIVEN UP FOR DEAD UNTIL LAST Sunday. THEN A SHAFT WAS SUNK TO A DISUSED GALLERY. THERE THE ELEVEN MEN WERE FOUND TO BE STILL ALIVE. IMMEDIATELY THE COMPLEX RESCUE OPERATION SWUNG INTO ACTION. WITH SURGICAL PRECISION THE SHAFTS WERE SUNK. FIRST STOOD WAS SENT DOWN, THEN THE RESCUE SHAFT WAS DRILLED.)
TODAY THE MEN WHO HAD WAITED WITHOUT TIME AND HOPE, WERE SAFE IN HOSPITAL...SHARING ROOMS, UNABLE TO BREAK THE BOND THAT HAD HELD THEM FOR TWO WEEKS...
