  • Description

Russian boats -- competing in the biennial tall ships race for the first time -- lay first and sixth after the first day's sailing to Gdynia, Poland, on Monday (15 July).

The 67 sailing boats, of greatly varying sizes, left the starting line at Drogden Tower ten miles (16 kms) south of Copenhagen on Sunday. By the following night, the 1,727 ton three masted barque Tovarisch crewed by 135 Russian merchant navy cadets was 14 miles (22 kms) ahead in the 450 mile (720 kms) race across the Baltic.

The other Russian boat, the Kruzenshtern in sixth place, is the largest boat in the race at 3,185 tons. Last year's winner, Polish entry Dar Pomorza, is second.

The finishing places will not necessarily he the final positions. The big square riggers, which started firs,t are competing under handicap with the smaller ships.

This year's race is also the first time an east European port has been included in the itinerary.

SYNOPSIS: A Russian boat competing in the biennial tall ships race for the first time passes the starting line ten miles south of Copenhagen, Denmark, on Sunday.

The sixty-seven sailing boats from twelve countries had four hundred and fifty miles of the Baltic between them and the finish at the Polish port of Gdynia. Last year's winner, the Polish boat Dar Pomorza, was second after the first day -- fourteen miles behind the three masted Tovarisch manned by a hundred and thirty-five Russian merchant navy cadets.

The other Russian boat, the Kruzenshtern, is the largest boat in the race. It was in sixth place. The finishing places will not necessarily be the final positions because the big square riggers are handicapped.
