    Italy's premier-designate, Signor Giulio Andreotti, is expected to call on President Leoni on Thursday (10 Feb) to report the breakdown of his efforts to form a coalition government.

    On Wednesday (9 Feb), Signor Andreotti spent eight hours talking with the leaders of Italy's four centre-left parties.

    But when the meeting ended it was announced that they felt unable to form a coalition government.

    The announcement means that a provisional government will have to be formed in Italy until a general election can be arranged.

    SYNOPSIS: In Rome on Wednesday -- a final meeting aimed at forming a coalition government under Signor Giulio Andreotti. The leaders of four centre-left parties were called to the meeting to discuss possibilities. Signor La Malfa of the Republican party and Signor Reale of the Monarch Party were among them. The meeting was widely interpreted as a "last ditch" effort to resurrect the coalition government.

    Representing the Social Democrat Party -- Signor Mario Tannassi. The meeting was to last eight hours - but ended in disagreement.

    Signor Ferri, with Signor Tannassi, is also a Social Democrat.

    Signor Arnaldo Forlani of the Democrat Party arrived with premier-designate, signor Andreotti. With the failure of the talks he was expected to report to the president. The next move is likely to be the formation of a provisional government - and the calling of an early general election in Italy.
