The big American airbase at Thakli, about 200 kms north of Bangkok, has been re-opened. It is part of the US aerial build-up in South East Asia for attacks upon Communist forces in North and South Vietnam. The airbase closed down over a year ago, since when the small town of Thakli has lapsed back into rural slumber.
How bars are being hastily reduce rated and re-opened, the road from Bangkok is jammed with traffic bringing in unemployed Thais eager to find work at the Thakli base. Bar girls find more congenial work around the town, where newly-arrived GI's pour into the freshly-pointed bars and restaurants. Business is booming again in Thakly. The townsfolk hope the newly-escalated stage of the war will continue as long as possible.
