The West cares more and more to secure their contact with Asian countries, especially in transhipment of goods and oil. As it's known, the Suez-Canal is the only way by which they could contact so far the Asian countries. The nuclear attitude of Colonel Nasser towards the Western countries, induces them and Israel to seek for another way by which they could replace the Suez-Canal. Owing to its geographical position, Israel already has built an oil pipeline from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Mediterranean Sea, which is already fully operating.
And now, with the assistance of the United States (as a first step 5 million Dollars have been already invested by the USA) also France is giving big help to this enterprise, Israel started to build a railway of 300 Km. from Beer-Sheba - Dimona to Red Sea at Aqaba-Gulf. The whole enterprise well cost Dollars 50 Millions and will help to develop and populate the Israel Desert of Negev but mainly it's meant for trans-shipments of goods from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and inversely. The first works of the above railway have started on the Beer-Sheba-Dimona junction line, 37 km. long, which will cost $5,5 millions and will also permit Israel to exploit the rich mineral and phosphate mines in the Negev.
