  • Description

In Lebanon, the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Yasser Arafat, addressed a rally at Beirut's Arab University on Wednesday (29 November) to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. During his speech, Mr. Arafat re-affirmed his continued opposition to the recent peace initiative between Israel and Egypt, which culminated in the signing of the Camp David accord.

SYNOPSIS: The Solidarity Day was decreed by the United Nations, and a representative of the U.N., Samir Sanbar, addressed the rally on the reasons behind the ruling. November the 29th was chosen because it is the anniversary of the General Assembly's decision in 1947 to set up both a Jewish and an Arab state in Palestine. The issue of an independent Palestinian homeland has been the major obstacle to a Middle East peace settlement.

The leader of Lebanon's Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, offered his support to the PLO's guerrilla campaign against Israel's continued occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. After the initial peace agreement with Israel, Egypt has demanded that any treaty is linked to israeli withdrawal from these territories.

Mr. Arafat condemned the latest plans for a Palestinian state as a conspiracy between Egypt and Israel. He described the Camp David peace formula as false, saying that there could never be an end to the Middle East conflict without the creation of an autonomous Palestinian state. He called for revolution in the occupied territories, saying this was the only way Palestinians could achieve their aim of independence.
