Background: Britain's new aircraft carrier "Hermes" was moved from dry dock at Barrow-in-Furness in Lancashire, Nov 2, prior to her sea trials later this month.

"Hermes" had a long wait to get down to the sea - fifteen years altogether.

Her keel was laid in 1944, but with the end of the Japanese war work stopped on the ship.

A few years later, work was resumed and by 1953 "Hermes" had got as far as being launched. Then another lull, until work was finally restarted three years ago.

"Hermes" is a carrier of 22,000 tons; she has cost more than GBP15 million.
