Background: SCIENTISTS AT THE ALL AFRICAN LEPROSY AND REHABILITATION CENTRE IN ADDIS ABABA HOPE TO HAVE AN ANTI-LEPROSY SERUM BY 1973. STUDENTS FROM MANY AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE ATTENDING COURSES AT THE CENTRE AS PART OF A CAMPAIGN TO STAMP OUT THE DISEASE FROM THE CONTINGENT.

DR. PAUL BRAND, WHO IS ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE CENTRE, WHERE CAMERAMEN WERE INVITED RECENTLY, SAID THAT WORK WAS NOW GOING ON TO GROW THE BACILLI FOR A SERUM. SCIENTISTS AT THE CENTRE HOPE TO HAVE THE SERUM READY BEFORE THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT OSLO IN 1973 TO MARK THE CENTENARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE LEPROSY BACTERIA BY THE NORWEGIAN SPECIALIST DR. ARNE HANSEN. AMONG THE TEACHERS AT THE CENTRE ARE DR. LUTHER FISHER, OF THE UNITED STATES; DR. PAUL BRAND, OF BRITAIN, WHO IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S LEADING SPECIALISTS ON LEPROSY; DR. FELTON ROSS, OF BRITAIN, WHO GIVES LECTURES ON LEPROSY CONTROL AND CONDUCTS EXAMINATIONS FOR PHYSIOTHERAPY STUDENTS. APART FROM THOSE OF ETHIOPIA, STUDENTS COME FROM SEVERAL AFRICAN COUNTRIES INCLUDING ZAMBIA, LIBERIA AND CAMEROUN. ASSISTANTS AT THE CENTRE ARE ALSO DRAWN FROM MANY COUNTRIES.

DR. BRAND SAID THAT THERE WERE AT LEAST 15 PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM LEPROSY AND THE DISEASE WAS CLASSIFIED AS WORLD-WIDE. HE SAID THAT LEPROSY EXISTED IN EVERY COUNTRY OF THE WORLD EXCEPT CHILE. LEPROSY WAS NOT HEREDITARY, BUT SO FAR IT HAD NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED NOW IT WAS TRANSMITTED. HE EMPHASISED THAT IT WAS CURABLE IN ITS EARLY STAGES, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS TO PERSUADE THE VICTIMS TO BRAVE THE SOCIAL STIGMA ATTACHED TO THE DISEASE AND ACCEPT TREATMENT. ONE OF THE MAIN TASKS OF THE CENTRE IS THE REHABILITATION OF THOUSANDS OF LEPERS. THE JOB IS NOT ONLY TO CURE THE PATIENT BUT TO GET HIM TO WORK AFTER HE IS CURED, SAID DR. BRAND. HE ADDED THAT FREE TREATMENT WAS NOW AFTER HE IS CURED, SAID SPECIALISED INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
