    THE CHIN AND A RIGHT FINGER OF SAINT ANTHONY, A FRANCISCAN FRIAR REVERED THROUGHOUT THE CATHOLIC WORLD, WERE BROUGHT TO THE PORTUGUESE CAPITAL ABOARD AN ITALIAN LINER FROM GENOA FOR THE CELEBRATIONS, WHICH INCLUDE SIXTY SIMULTANEOUS MARRIAGES.

    BORN OF A NOBLE PORTUGUESE FAMILY IN 1195, SAINT ANTHONY WAS AN ELOQUENT PREACHER WHO WORKED AS A FRANCISCAN MONK IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE AND ITALY. ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH - JUNE 13 - DOZENS OF MARRIAGES ARE CELEBRATED EACH YEAR.

    IN ADDITION TO PORTUGUESE GIRLS PRAYING FOR HAPPY MARRIAGES, THE RELICS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY SOME TWO HUNDRED ITALIAN PILGRIMS.
