Second fastest in the first day of practice was Andretti's Lotus team mate Ronnie Peterson, the only driver close enough on the points table to prevent Andretti from winning the world driving championship.
SYNOPSIS: The start of last month's Dutch Grand Prix, and, as so often happens this season, Andretti led his Swedish team mate Ronnie Peterson into the first bend. More than ten years ago, Andretti was pounding the dirt tracks of the United states, where he has become naturalised. Since his Formula One debut for Louts in 1968, he has driven for many teams, and now, on his return of Lotus, he can consistently led home his teammate, and the rest.
Here in Holland, the pattern was the same: Andretti, then Peterson.
Andretti looks a certainty for the championship, even if he does not win on Sunday. His sixty-three points, and Peterson's fifty-one, put tem well ahead of ali others, and Peterson has instructions not to overtake his team leader. Andretti shows every sign of wanting to stay ahead. There'll be a partisan crowd, and he has a chance of equalling the late Jim Clark's record of seven Grand Prix victories in a season.
Andretti has brought to Grand Prix racing a wide experience of many branches of motor sport. he started with his twin brother, racing an ancient sedan on dusty tracks. His first major success was his win in the 1969 Indianapolis '500', after showing his versatility by winning the Daytona '500' and the Sebring twelve-hour sports car race. The general all-rounder from Pennsylvania believes he can do it again at Monza.
