Background: TURKEY BECAME A REPUBLIC ON 29 OCTOBER, 1923, AND IN A FEW WEEKS THE PEOPLE OF TURKEY WILL BE CELEBRATING THIS BIRTH OUT OF THE OLD OTTOMAN EMPIRE. BUT MANY EVENTS OF THE WAR THAT BROUGHT THIS INDEPENDENCE ARE STILL REMEMBERED AND CELEBRATED - INCLUDING THE RELIEF OF ISTANBUL ON OCTOBER 6TH, 1922. ON FRIDAY, CITIZENS AND SOLDIERS RECALLED THIS TURNING POINT IN THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.

THE ANIBAL HILL, WHICH RISES ABOVE GEBZE, NEAR ISTANBUL, WAS THE LAST STAND OF THE SUCCESSFUL ARMY WHICH LIBERATED THE TURKISH CAPITAL. ON FRIDAY, AMID THE BALLOONS, THE FLAGS, THE CHEERS, THE MUSIC OF FESTIVITY, SOLDIERS OF THE TURKISH FIRST ARMY PERFORMED A DIGNIFIED CEREMONY. TAKSIM SQUARE, IN THE CENTRE OF ISTANBUL, WAS THE SCENE OF THE HANDING OVER OF SOIL TAKEN FROM THE HILL, AND OF A FLAG, CARRIED TO THE HEAD OF THE FIRST ARMY BY TRADITIONAL RUNNERS.

MILITARY STUDENTS, MARINES, AND NUMEROUS CITIZENS IN COLOURFUL DRESS ADDED THEIR OWN MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT TO THE CEREMONY, WHICH IS PERFORMED WITH ALL THE ENTHUSIASM OF A NATIONAL HOLIDAY.
