Background: President Kaunda of Zambia went to Ndola on Monday (18 September) for a memorial service to the late United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld. The service was held just outside Ndola, on the site where Mr. Hammarskjoeld was killed in an aircraft crash exactly six years ago.
Mr. Hammarskjoeld died on a peace mission..... he was flying to Ndola in a bid to end the secession of what was then the Province of Katanga from the rest of the Congo.
In his address at the site of the crash, President Kaunda said of the late Secretary General......
Then Dr. Kaunda heard the Last Post played. Earlier, speaking of the United Nations, he said that the world organisation had failed to solve the problems of colonialism in Southern Africa.
