    FOURTEEN OFFICERS OF THE UNITED STATES FIRST MARINE DIVISION BEGAN A FIFTY-MILE MARCH ON THURSDAY.THEIR OBJECT WAS TO COVER THE DISTANCE IN LESS THAN TWENTY HOURS - TO COMPLY WITH AN ORDER ISSUED BY PRESIDENT , THEODORE ROOSEVELT IN 1908.HE CLAIMED THAT ALL MARINE OFFICERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO MARCH 50 MILES IN LESS THAN A DAY.

    THE OLD RULE WAS DISCOVERED BY GENERAL DAVID SHOUP, MARINE COMMANDANT, WHO PASSED IT ON TO PRESIDENT KENNEDY.THE PRESIDENT THEN ASKED THE OFFICER FOLLOWED THE ORDER AGAIN, TO SEE IF THEY WERE AS FIT AS THEIR PREDECESSORS.

    THE MARINES BEGAN THE MARCH FROM THEIR BASE AT PENDLETON, CALIFORNIA.THEY FINISHED ON FRIDAY, WITHIN THE TIME LIMIT.
