Services were held throughout Italy on Friday (25 April) to commemorate the liberation of the country from the German Army occupation 30 years ago.

Civic dignitaries, including Rome's mayor,Mr. Clerio Darida, laid wreaths on liberation memorials and attended religious services.

On 25 April, 1945, patriot forces throughout what remained of occupied Italy staged attacks on the occupation forces. By 27 April the Italian Committee of National Liberation reported that it was in control of virtually all of northern Italy.

The German forces in the area officially surrendered on 2 May 1945.

On 28 April partisan forces captured Fascist leader Benito Mussolini who was attempting to escape to Switzerland. He and his party, which included his mistress, were summarily shot through the back of the neck. Their bodies were taken to Milan and hung by the heels in a public square. They were later buried in unmarked graves.
