  • Description

At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Henry Rono of Kenya has scored a double athletics victory by winning both the 3,000 metres steeplechase and the 5,000 metres event. Observers had expected the 5,000 metre race on Thursday (10 August) to be a duel between Rono and the 10,000 meter champion, Brendan Foster of England. But after the half-way stage, the Kenyan astounded spectators by accelerating to a clear 70 metre lead over his rivals. Another Kenyan victory was Mike Boit's win in the 800 metres. The euphoria of the two African's performances contrasted sharply with the disappointment at the exit of Jamaican Sprinter Don Quarrie from the 200 metre final after suffering a painful muscle cramp. Quarrie had hoped to complete his third successive Commonwealth double after winning the 100 metres on Monday (7 August). Instead it was Allan Wells of Scotland who took the 200 metres gold. David Coleman of the BBC reports on all three of major athletics events, starting with the 800 metres.
