Fishermen in the small town of Hughenden, recently had a rare treat. Fish, hundreds of them, "rained" down on the area during a torrential tropical downpour. Weather bureau experts believe a water spout sucked the fish from a nearby river and then dumped them on Hughenden. Since 1826, about 100 waterspouts have been reported along Australia's north-eastern coastline, with several so-called "fish falls" also reported.
The fish that fell on Hughenden were in quite good health, considering their short flight. The smaller fish found escape in the storm drains, but the tasty freshwater perch soon graced the cooking pots of local "anglers".
