  • Description

Carlos Monzon of Argentina is favoured to retain his world middleweight boxing title when he meets former champion Emile Griffith of the United States at the Luna Park Stadium, Buenos Aires, tomorrow (Saturday 25 September).

It will be the second time the 29-year-old Argentine has defended the title he won from Italy's Nino Benvenuti in Rome last November.

SYNOPSIS: In Buenos Aires, boxing fans have bought out the Luna Park Stadium's 21-thousand seats to see Argentina Carlos Monzon defend his world middle-weight title against Emile Griffith of the United States. Some of them have already seen 29-year-old Monzon - in the black vest and shorts - sparring with Dominican fighter Luis Galvan.

It is the second time Monzon his defended the title he won from Italy's Nino Benvenuti with a 12th round knock-out last November, and he is favoured to out-box Griffith. He's only been defeated three times in 85 bouts.

But Griffith, the 33-year-old Virgin I lander, is expected to put up a tough fight. He is lighter and shorter than Monzon, and is expected to seek a close-in fight where he can use his quick jabs and uppercuts to advantage.

A former world welterweight champion, Griffith has a record of 70 victories in 82 fights, including 20 Knock-outs. Veteran fighter Carlos Aguilar, who once defeated Monzon, said Griffith was dangerous when attacking and knew all the tricks.
