Portugal's Socialist Party leader Dr. Mario soares attended the first of several planned meetings with West Germany's ruling Social Democrats in Frankfurt on Monday (15 September).
The first meeting took place at the Social Democrats' headquarters, and Dr. Soares confirmed with West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and former Chancellor Willy Brandt, the party's chairman.
The West German party has continually announced its strong support for its Portuguese counterparts. Herr Brandt has promised that his party will discuss concrete aid to the Socialists.
And Herr Schmidt has been quoted as saying that NATO should take whatever steps possible to prevent the loss of Portugal as an Atlantic ally.
Dr. Soares hopes to arrange a Portuguese-West German trade agreement and will also explain the political programme of the new Lisbon Government.
The Portuguese party leader will also be having talks with West German Minister of Foreign Affairs Herr Genscher during his three-day visit.
