  • Description

ONE OF THE MOST STRIKING EXHIBITS IN THE PHYSICS EXHIBITION IN LONDON THIS WEEK IS VOTEM - THE VOICE-OPERATZO TYPEWRITER EMPLOYING MORSE CODE. INITIALLY DESIGNED AS AN ELECTRO-MECHANICAL AID FOR SERIOUSLY PARALYSED PEOPLE, THE CONTROL UNIT CAN ALSO OPERATE OTHER LINKS, LIKE TELEPHONES.

VOTEM OPERATES BY DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN LONG AND SHORT VOICE SOUNDS SUCH AS 'DI' AND 'DAR'. THE OPERATOR SPEAKS A MODIFIED MORSE CODE INTO A MICROPHONE AND ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS TRANSLATE THE CODED SPEECH INTO ELECTRICAL SIGNALS FOR OPERATING THE TYPEWRITER OR TELEPHONE. IT IS NOW REGARDED AS HAVING POTENTIAL APPLICATION IN ALMOST ANY SITUATION WHERE AN OPERATOR NEEDS TO SPEAK TO MACHINE.
