    THE 18TH ASSEMBLY OF THE INTERNATIONAL RUBBER STUDY GROUP - THE FIRST TO BE HELD IN AFRICA - OPENED IN LAGOS, NIGERIA YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

    ADDRESSING THE OPENING SESSION, THE MILITARY ADMINISTRATOR OF LAGOS, MAJOR BOLAJI JOHNSON SAID THAT THE INCREASING COMPETITION FROM SYNTHETIC RUBBER WAS PROVING THE BIGGEST HEADACHE OF THE NATURAL RUBBER PRODUCERS.

    HE TOLD THE DELEGATES: "IT SEEMS THERE IS NEED TO EXPLORE, MUCH MORE THAN HAS BEEN DONE TO DATE, THE POSSIBILITIES OF COOPERATION BETWEEN THE PRODUCERS OF BOTH KINDS."
    HE ALSO URGED DELEGATES TO PUT EMPHASIS ON THE EFFECT OF THE PRESENT STATE OF THE RUBBER INDUSTRY ON THE ECONOMY OF DEVELOPING NATIONS LIKE NIGERIA, WHICH PRODUCES BETWEEN 65,000 AND 70,000 TONS OF NATURAL RUBBER ANNUALLY.

    THE FIGURE IS ABOUT THREE PER CENT OF THE WORLD TOTAL AND NIGERIA COMES SIXTH AS THE LARGEST PRODUCER OF NATURAL RUBBER AFTER INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, THAILAND, CEYLON AND VIETNAM.

    THE CONFERENCE IS BEING ATTENDED BY DELEGATES FROM 29 MEMBER GOVERNMENTS AND SEVERAL OBSERVERS FROM NON MEMBER COUNTRIES AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS. THE ASSEMBLY IS DUE TO END ON NOVEMBER 26TH.
