  • Description

Police in Tel Aviv have begun tests on a new type of lie detector.

The device was developed recently at the Weizmann Institute in collaboration with the Israeli police, and instead of using the old perspiration, heartbeat and blood pressure measuring method, the new apparatus can be used on suspects without them even realising it.

On Thursday (8 March), police in Tel Aviv used the device in a test during a routine interrogation of a man facing a charge of dealing in hashish.

It simply measures changes in breathing. The suspect under interrogation needs no tubes or wires attached to his body. A beam is simply aimed at the person and bounced back to the instrument, which is carried unscupected in a normal brief case. The detector measures changes in breathing, caused by emotional change brought about by lying.

The police are still only at the testing stage of the new device, but they say the tests are extremely satisfactory.
