    THE GOVERNMENT OF NIGER IS TO SET UP A COMMITTEE FOR REPATRIATES TO DEAL WITH THE SERIOUS PROBLEMS OF THE THOUSANDS OF NIGER CITIZENS WHO HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE GHANA IN RECENT WEEKS.

    THE COMMITTEE'S JOB WILL BE TO LOOK AFTER THE INTERESTS OF THE REPATRIATES, AND CO-ORDINATE EFFORTS TO HELP THEM RETURN TO THEIR FAMILIES.

    THE DECISION TO SET UP THE COMMITTEE WAS TAKEN AT AN URGENCY CABINET MEETING, AND A DECREE WILL BE MADE LATER TO DEFINE ITS FUNCTIONS, AND PROVIDE IT WITH FUNDS.

    MORE THAN ONE-THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE BEING HELD IN POLICE CUSTODY THROUGHOUT GHANA PENDING DEPORTATION, FOLLOWING THE GOVERNMENT'S NOVEMBER 18TH ANNOUNCEMENT THAT ALL ALIENS WITHOUT RESIDENCE PERMITS WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY WITHIN FOURTEEN-DAYS.

    THOSE AFFECTED ARE MOSTLY AFRICANS FROM NIGER, NIGERIA, TOGO AND DAHOMEY. SEVERAL-THOUSAND EXPELLEES HAVE ALREADY LEFT GHANA, WHILE OTHERS HAVE BEEN JAILED TO FACILITATE THEIR EARLY DEPARTURE.

    THE FIRST NIGER EXPELLEES, THIS WEEK BEGAN ARRIVING IN THE CAPITAL NIAMEY TO AWAIT TRANSPORT BACK TO THEIR VILLAGES OF ORIGIN.
