A gas explosion and fire demolished a restaurant and bar near City Hall in Manhattan on Friday afternoon (11 December). Fifty people were injured, 12 critically. Authorities fear more victims may be hidden among the debris.
Film of the restaurant fire was taken by a camera crew which was nearby at the time of the explosion, and was on the scene before the police or fire appliances arrived.
One of the owners of the restaurant had gone down into the basement to investigate a smell of gas. Five minutes after he had shut a safety valve an explosion rocked the building. Flames swept through the two-storeyed building as passers by tried to rescue occupants. Later that evening, a crane...assisted by search-lights...was still sifting through debris in search of victims.
