TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ 2): "I have come in great earnestness and with hopes. That's why from the very beginning I presented myself to ambassador Jarring, I have put and am putting myself at his disposal, and I think we have had already a serious and useful exchange of views. I can tell you that we have had causes to think that the cease-fire was violated by Israel forces. We did not go to the press, and I am not going now to television to use the opportunity to speak about them. For the other allegations, I think I can trust your government, and I think I will accept the very diplomatic language by which you have announced your findings about the situation. How much do you think can be accomplished in the part of the 90 days left of the cease-fire.



We are ready to exert every possible effort, and we hope that something can be achieved, at least that we can regain the confidence that the there is such motives on the other side, on the other part too. Ninety days is not a very long day. War can be made in six days. I hope peace can be made in 90.

Background: Speaking at the United Nations on Wednesday, August 19, Egypt's ambassador Dr. Alzayat expressed confidence in the Middle East cease-fire.. In answer to Israeli allegations of violation by Egypt he said he had cause to think that the Israelis had violated the cease-fire. But he was ready, he said to exert every effort to restore it, and had already had useful discussions with ambassador Jarring.

Cairo radio has reported all the Israeli allegations of Egyptian ceasefire violations, but as Dr. Alzayat also pointed out in the course of his interview, there has been a Government policy so far of restraint in comment. Dr. Alzayat said he was not going to use the television medium to discuss ceasefire violations now.

The authoritative Cairo newspaper Al Ahram said on Thursday (20 August) that Egypt would not be drawn into 'public politics', and accused Israel of trying to thwart peace efforts aimed at the withdrawal of its troops from the Arab territories it occupied.

Israel up to now has put off nominating who will handle its side of the indirect talks with the Arabs because of differences with Washington over the violations issue.

Dr. Alzayat was questioned in New York by an American reporter.
