Background: The new Chilean Charge d'Affaires in Havana, Dr. Jorge Edwards Valdes, told interviewer in Cuba that the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries opened up possibilities of co-operation in many fields. Dr. Edwards stressed that he had not come to Havana as a mere formality , but to set up a diplomatic mission which would prepare the way for the appointment of a Chilean Ambassador to Cuba.
The re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Chile and Cuba follows the election of Senor Allende as President of Chile. He is pledged to resume full relations with socialist countries. The previous regime in Chile had no diplomatic relations with Castro's Cuba.
