  • Description

Israeli and Syrian forces clashed again on Friday (26 June) after three days of the heaviest fighting on the Golan Heights since the six-day war in 1967.

In Friday's battle about 30 tanks spearheaded a four-hour Israeli thrust through the Syrian frontline along a 12 kilometre (eight mile) front.

During the recent fighting Israel has reported shooting down four Syrian MIGs, destroying at least 20 tanks, killing scores of Syrians and taking 37 prisoners. Israeli casualties were given at 10 soldiers killed and 27 wounded -- with one aircraft shot down.

Syria however says that the Israelis lost 11 aircraft and 110 troops killed or wounded.

The Israeli Chief-of-staff, Lieutenant-General Gar-Lev, said on Saturday (27 June) that the aim of the action was to teach Syria lesson and to force them to respect the ceasefire line. The Syrians meanwhile have stressed that they are determined to push Israeli forces off the Golan Heights which were captured in the six-day war.

On Saturday an uneasy peace had settled over Golan Heights after the bitter fighting which coincides with the new United States Peace initiative in the Middle-East.
