    Taiwan marked the 2,522nd anniversary of the birth of the philosopher Confucius with traditional dances and music in Taipei on Wednesday (29 September).

    High ranking Government officials attended the dawn celebrations at the Confucius Temple, watching the ancient fan dances performed by Taiwan's young girls.

    The day was also celebrated as Teachers' Day, when the country's most distinguished teachers are presented with awards for long service or outstanding achievements in the field of education.

    SYNOPSIS: Taiwan celebrated the 2,522nd anniversary of the birth of the philosopher Confucius in Taipei on Wednesday. Young girls performed traditional dances in honour of Confucius, termed by many as the pillar of wisdom underlying the Chinese philosophy.

    The main part of the celebrations was held at the Temple of Confucius.... Wednesday was also the day set aside for observing Taiwan's Teachers' Day, and in other parts of the country, men and women who had contributed outstanding services to their profession were being presented with diplomas and awards.
