  • Description

The British Norton motorcycle firmly re-established itself in the 750cc Tourist Trophy Race on the Isle of Man on Wednesday (6 June).

Peter Williams, a 33 year old development engineer with Norton, and Mick Grant took first and second places on their John Player Nortons.

Williams' ride only just failed to match the all-time TT record set by Mike Hailwood on a Honda in 1967 in the Senior TT: He averaged 105.62 miles an hour (approximately 170 kilometres per hour), just over Williams' average of 105.47 miles an hour.

Williams, who has been runner-up in the TT six times, broke all the formula 750cc records and startled everyone with an opening lap on the 37 1/2 mile (59 1/2 kms.) circuit of 106.58 miles an hour and he went on to push this to 107.27 miles an hour, again just short of Mike Hailwood's 1967 record of 108.77 miles an hour.

Third in this year's race was Tony Jefferies -- like second-placed Grant a Yorkshireman -- riding a Triumph, and thus making it an all-British victory.

SYNOPSIS: Competitors set off in this year's 750cc Tourist Trophy race in the Isle of Man -- a race in which British bikes took the first three places.

Quarter Bridge seen here is an acute right-hand bend with an adverse camber which makes it very testing on machine and rider, especially on braking skill.

Eventual winner Peter Williams takes Governor's Bridge, thirty-seven miles from the start of the thirty-seven and three-quarter mile circuit. This is probably the slowest part of the circuit with a twisting downhill approach into a sharp-left hand hairpin leading to the home straight.

Another lock at Williams, this time on Signpost Corner, the previous bend half-a-mile back. No. 14 in this bunch of riders is Mick Grant who came second in the race on a Norton.

Now the finish and it's Williams' Norton past the line after a ride in which he'd broken all the formula 750 records.
