  • Description

THOUSANDS OF HONG KONG CHINESE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) DEFIED A GOVERNMENT WARNING AGAINST DISORDERLY GATHERINGS AND STAGED ANOTHER MASSIVE ANTI-BRITISH DEMONSTRATION IN THE COLONY'S BUSINESS SECTIONS.

HUNDREDS OF POLICE MADE A BATON CHARGE AND FIRED TEAR GAS SHELLS TO BREAK UP THE DEMONSTRATORS. IT TOOK ABOUT FOUR HOURS TO CLEAR THE STREETS IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR AND MORE THAN 40 ARRESTS WERE REPORTED.

THE CHINESE ARE PROTESTING AGAINST ALLEGED BRUTALITY IN RIOTING WHICH FOLLOWED AN INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE AT A PLASTIC FLOWER FACTORY.

RIOT POLICE CLASHED WITH A SMALL GROUP OF DEMONSTRATORS IN FRONT OF THE HILTON HOTEL WHEN THEY TRIED TO BREAK THROUGH A POLICE LINE GUARDING THE MAIN APPROACH TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE - A FOCAL POINT OF DEMONSTRATIONS DURING THE PAST WEEK.

POLICE TOLD DEMONSTRATORS THEY COULD GO TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN BATCHES NOT EXCEEDING 20 IF THEY WANTED TO HAND IN PETITIONS, BUT ONLY A FEW GROUPS TOOK UP THE OFFER. THEY CARRIED CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG'S RED BOOK OF QUOTATIONS AND PARADED PAST SHOUTING "DOWN WITH BRITISH IMPERIALISM" AND "HANG TRENCH" (GOVERNOR SIR DAVID TRENCH).

SEVERAL INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED DURING THE DAY. YOUNG CHINESE WERE SAID TO HAVE MOLESTED EUROPEANS, STONED POLICE AND CARS, AND TORN DOWN A UNION JACK THAT WAS FLYING OUTSIDE A FIRE STATION.

TODAY AN UNPRECEDENTED DUSK TO DAWN CURFEW WAS IMPOSED ON MOST OF HONG KONG ISLAND AND POLICE WERE AGAIN CALLED OUT TO BREAK UP CROWDS OF DEMONSTRATORS.
