  • Description

Another milestone in aviation history was reached recently at Marine Corps Air Station, Quantico, Virginia, when an airborne HMX-1 tanker helicopter successfully refuelled a tracked landing vehicle and tank "in the field."
Although still in this infant testing stage, the refuelling system, if adapted permanently by the Marine Corps, could prove a major advance to its present land-sea-air capabilities.

The system could prove an invaluable asset where the need for speed and mobility is required in that airborne refuelling could also utilized by moving vehicles should it become necessary.

Vehicles operating far out of range of the conventional type refuelling system could be serviced "on the spot" or wherever the helicopter could utilize hills, trees or mountains for cover against enemy fire.

During two recently held tests, the HMX-1 helicopter tanker used a 150-foot hose for both air-to-air and air-to-land refuelling operations.

Completely flexible, the system could be applied to larger and more various tasks such as insecticide carriers for heavily wooded and swamp terrain, and water carriers.

Using larger helicopters, the same method of operations could be used for refuelling four or more land vehicles. It could also be used while any vehicle moved over terrain or water.
