    IN THE UNITED STATES, RESIDENTS FLED THE HEAVILY POPULATED COAST OF SOUTHERN FLORIDA TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS HURRICANE BETSY SWEPT IN, AFTER BLASTING THE BAHAMAS.

    THE FIRST STRONG WINDS STARTED POUNDING THE FLORIDA COAST LATE LAST NIGHT AT 74 MILES (12 KMS) AN HOUR. THE TIDE WAS RUNNING FOUR AND A HALF FEET (1.4 METRES) ABOVE NORMAL.

    THE HURRICANE MOVED TOWARDS THE MAINLAND AT SEVEN MILES (11 KMS) AN HOUR AND THE STORM CENTRE WAS EXPECTED TO HIT KEY LARGO 50 MILES (80 KMS) SOUTH OF MIAMI.

    IN CUBA, PEOPLE WERE EVACUATED FROM LOW-LYING LAND FOR FEAR OF TIDAL WAVES. NASSAU, CAPITAL OF THE BAHAMAS, WAS BATTERED FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS. PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS FAILED AND THERE WAS NO NEWS OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED ON MOST OF THE OTHER ISLANDS IN THE LONG BAHAMAS CHAIN.
