BEGIN: "He will be welcome. When President Sadat says that he is ready to come to Jerusalem to the Knesset, I welcome this statement by President Sadat.

I may only remind him, and other nations, that when I come into this office I said that I intended to go to any place, including Cairo, in order to conduct negotiations about the establishment of real peace in the Middle East. I also suggested that negotiations for peace treaties can take place in our capitals, Cairo Jerusalem, Damascus, or any neutral place like Geneva. Background: The announcement by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat that he is prepared to go to Jerusalem, if it will help Middle East peace talks, was welcomed on Thursday (10 November) by Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Mr. Begin said he would personally meet President Sadat at Tel Aviv Airport, and receive him with all honour should the Egyptian leader carry out his declared readiness to address the Israeli Parliament.

SYNOPSIS: The new session of the Egyptian Parliament opened on Wednesday and it was then that President Sadat announced his willingness to go to Jerusalem. Among those listening to the President was Palestine Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat, who had returned from a brief visit to the Libyan Jamahiriyah.

In his speech President Sadat also said he would let nothing stand in the way of the proposed Geneva Peace Conference, and he told delegates: "Before the entire Arab nations I say we are not interested, and do not care about procedures. I am going to Geneva. Nobody will stop me from demanding our rights: "And he added: since this is our conviction, no Arab should fear Geneva". Israeli reaction was soon forthcoming.
