  • Description

CZECHOSLOVAKIAN STUDENTS AT THE CHARLES UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE, TODAY (TUESDAY) VOTED TO MAINTAIN UNTIL TOMORROW THE SIT-IN STRIKE BEING HELD IN PROTEST AT THE REPLACEMENT OF MR ALEXANDER DUBCEK AS COMMUNIST PARTY CHIEF BY DR. GUSTAV HUSAK. THE STUDENTS BEGAN THEIR SIT-IN AT THE PHILOSOPHY FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY YESTERDAY.

THE SIT-IN WAS DUPLICATED AT SEVERAL OTHER CENTRES, BUT THERE WAS NO SIGN OF ANY CLAMP-DOWN BY AUTHORITIES.

THE STUDENTS AT CHARLES UNIVERSITY APPEARED GRIM AND DETERMINED AS THEY DISCUSSED THE MOVE TO EXTEND THE SIT-IN FOR TWO MORE DAYS.

EARLIER, THE "OCCUPATION STRIKE" WAS DESCRIBED AS SHOWING FEW SIGNS THAT A BIG PLANNED PROTEST AGAINST CHANGES IN THE COMMUNIST PARTY LEADERSHIP WAS GETTING UNDERWAY. BUT AT LEAST 14 FACULTIES JOINED IN THE SIT-IN. POSTERS PASTED UP BY THE STUDENTS STRONGLY ATTACKED THE APPOINTMENT OF DR. HUSAK.

IT WAS A CHARLES UNIVERSITY PHILOSOPHY STUDENT, JAN PALACH, WHO DIED A NATIONAL HERO AFTER TURNING HIMSELF INTO A HUMAN TORCH LAST JANUARY IN A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST CENSORSHIP FOLLOWING THE WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

THE PRESENT DEMONSTRATION BY THE STUDENTS IS THE FIRST TRIAL OF STRENGTH WITH DR. HUSAK, WHO IS EXPECTED TO FLY TO MOSCOW FOR TALKS IN THE NEXT DAY OR SO.
