  • Description

Reports have it that the Americans have stated a willingness to abandon their bases in Morocco -- by means, it is said, of a Note to the Moroccan Government. This move would add new piquancy to the unsettled state of the whole coast of North Africa, with Nasser's influence undermining Arab-Western relations from the east and De Gaulle striving for a new deal with french territories in the area.

The American move, not confirmed, but not denied, is thought to stem from the simple reasoning that they believe Morocco will not remain sufficiently friendly with the West for the co-operation to continue. It is a view stated to be shared by British land and air force chiefs in the Middle East. King Mohammed V is said to have presided over a meeting of ministers early this week t discuss the Americans Note.

Earlier this year, we filmed life at Nouasseur Air Base in Morocco, largest base in North Africa, with a landing field larger than any in Europe. Here, 30 kms. from Casablanca, the base is a joint venture -- an Anglo-French concession, with the French sub-leasing a part to the United States!
Latest-type bombers are kept a Nouasseur, one of America's links in the global air base system. A very large number of troops are maintained there, with up-to-date schools and shopping facilities and a bus service for those without cars to get around the camp, which is 39 kms. round.

The Neilson C. Brown school on camp caters for 700 children of US servicemen. There is a High and a Junior School within its bounds and life for the pupils continues in a typically American way. Of course, they might well be back in the United States before long....if reports about the Note are indeed true.
