  • Description

An anti-terrorist campaign by President Hugo Banzer of Bolivia was highlighted on Friday (17th March) by a large demonstration that focused its attention on communist activities in Bolivia.

Demonstrators -- many of them women -- shouted "Out with Russians" and demanded the expulsion of Soviet diplomats.

The march -- organised by the National Popular Front -- converged from all parts of La Paz into Murillo Square in the centre of the city, where the demonstrators were addressed by President Banzer. He told them that terrorists would receive neither consideration nor pity and promised that ten terrorists would fall for every nationalist who dies.

There were simultaneous marches in the provincial capitals of Bolivia.

President Banzer took over power last August in a brief but bloody coup. Army units have been attempting since then to destroy terrorist supporters of ex-President Torres, who headed a left-wing government.

SYNOPSIS: Crowds in the Bolivian capital of La Paz Pause during an 'anti-extremist' demonstration on Friday to study posters describing the crimes of the terrorists against whom they are demonstrating. The terrorists -- led by Oswaldo Peredo -- are supporters of ex-President Torres.

Bolivian armed forces have been trying to put an end to their activities since the former ruler was overthrown last August by President Hugo Banzer. Large crowds joined in the march, carrying placards reading "Red Imperialism" and "Invading Communism".

President Banzer addressed the demonstrators as they gathered from all parts of the city. He promised that he would give no mercy to the terrorists, and said that ten terrorists would die for every nationalist killed by them. The crowds shouted demands for the expulsion of Soviet diplomats.
