Background: Turkish narcotics agents are reported to have seized 33 kilos (70 lbs) of morphine base, worth more than $1,000,000 (GBP400,000) on the American black market.
A wealthy landowner, Ismail Acer, has been arrested in connection with the haul. He comes from Afyon province in Western Turkey -- the area infamous in the past for opium-growing and which takes its name from the opium poppy.
Acar was arrested in Istanbul. He was in a car driven by a narcotics agent whom he had unwittingly hired as a chauffeur.
The drug haul and his arrest are the fruits of five months of undercover work by Turkish agents posing as drug traffickers. It is estimated in New York that the morphine base, after refining and diluting, would sell on the streets for between GBP 30,000 and GBP 40,000 (GBP 12,000 and GBP 16,000) a kilo.

Acar had unwittingly hired the agent as a chauffeur. Police say that the base is worth GBP 45,000 in Turkey.
After treatment it would have sold on the streets of New York for about GBP 14,000 a kilo.
