  • Description

Former United Sates Control Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Richard Helms appeared before the Senate Watergate Committee in Washington on Thursday (2 August). He said he resisted what he called 'totally unacceptable demands' from the White House for help for former agent E. Howard Hunt, later convicted in the Watergate bugging case.

Mr. Helms told the hearing that the CIA had nothing to do with the Watergate break-in. He said that former White House Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman had said that the CIA was concerned about FBI investigations in Mexico. He said that Mr. Haldeman had made what appeared to be an incorrect reference to a Mexico investigation 'running into the Bay of Pigs', the abortive CIA-supported invasion of Cuba in 1961.

SYNOPSIS: At the Senate Watergate Committee in Washington on Thursday, former Central Intelligence Agency director Richard Helms said he had no connection with the abortive CIA supported Cuban invasion in nineteen sixty-one.
