Background: In the Khmer Republic, heavy fighting continues in the area south of Phnom Penh. Last week government troops opened Highway 1, the route that links Phnom Penh and Saigon, but almost immediately communist forces launched attacks along Highway 3 leading south from the capital.
Many of the government troops have not been paid for several months, and some have left their posts to return to Phnom Penh. Other troops have deserted or gone over to the communists.
This film shows a group of government troops working their way back to Phnom Penh after becoming encircled by enemy troops. As they moved along Highway 3, they were harassed by communist gunfire. After a brief skirmish they continued their retreat.
